Hypertension is a chronic medical condition that affects millions globally, and its prevalence is rising in many sub-Saharan African countries, including Nigeria (Abiola et al., 2024). In Sokoto State, hypertension is a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases, stroke, and renal failure, contributing significantly to the healthcare burden (Garba et al., 2023). Effective management of hypertension often requires long-term adherence to medication, lifestyle modifications, and regular monitoring. However, many hypertensive patients struggle with medication adherence, which results in poorly controlled blood pressure and increased risk of complications.
Family support plays a critical role in improving health outcomes for patients with chronic conditions like hypertension. Emotional support, encouragement, and assistance in medication management can significantly enhance patients' motivation and adherence to prescribed treatments (Bashir et al., 2023). Studies have shown that patients who receive strong family support are more likely to follow their prescribed regimens, attend follow-up appointments, and experience improved health outcomes (Ojo et al., 2023). In Sokoto State, however, the impact of family support on medication adherence among hypertensive patients has not been comprehensively studied. This study will explore the role of family support in improving medication adherence among hypertensive patients in Sokoto State, with the aim of providing evidence for developing intervention strategies that involve family members in the management of hypertension.
Hypertension is a widespread issue in Sokoto State, yet many hypertensive patients fail to adhere to their prescribed medication regimens, resulting in poor disease management and increased risks of complications (Suleiman et al., 2023). While individual factors such as knowledge and healthcare access play a role, there is a lack of research on the influence of family support on medication adherence in this context. This study aims to fill that gap by evaluating how family support affects medication adherence and, consequently, the management of hypertension among patients in Sokoto State.
This study will focus on hypertensive patients attending healthcare facilities in Sokoto State, particularly examining their family support structures and medication adherence behaviors. Limitations may include the challenge of accurately measuring family support and medication adherence, as well as potential biases in self-reported data from patients or family members.
